Tier 1

Tier 1 (general) and (post-study work): highly skilled workers

This tier of the points-based system allows highly skilled migrants to apply for permission to work or train in the UK without a job offer. You will need to gain points for different criteria to be accepted into tier 1 (general) or tier 1 (post-study work). When accepted, you will be able to apply for posts within the parameters of the visa you have been awarded.

The points you must score are:

  • 75 points for attributes (age, qualifications, previous earnings, and experience in the UK)
  • 10 points for English language
  • 10 points for available maintenance (funds)

If you fail to meet the required level of points, your application will be rejected.

If you make a new application to tier 1 (general), you will have a restriction placed on your visa which means you are not able to access postgraduate medical training by this route. If an employer has been unable to fill the post with a UK/EEA applicant, you can apply for training a post under tier 2. Individuals with a current HSMP visa do not have to change their status to tier 1 until they wish to extend their stay.

If you are a foreign national who has graduated from a UK university, you have the opportunity to apply for the tier 1 (post-study work) category. If you meet the required number of points you will be able to apply for posts without a sponsor.
