UK Points Based System

The points-based system (PBS) was introduced by UK government in 2008 for managing migration for those wishing to enter the UK for work or study. It applies to nationals of all countries that are outside the EEA and has five tiers:

  • Tier 1 UK visa for highly skilled individuals to contribute to growth and productivity.
  • Tier 2 UK visa for skilled workers with a job offer to fill gaps in the UK labour force.
  • Tier 3 UK visa for limited numbers of low skilled workers needed to fill specific temporary labour shortages. (Currently suspended indefinitely by the UK Border Agency.)
  • Tier 4 UK visa for students.
  • Tier 5 UK visa for youth mobility and temporary workers: people allowed to work in the UK for a limited period of time to satisfy primarily non-economic objectives.
